Thursday's Thought... A Mission Trip to Disney World?!

As you know by reading the little blurb to the right called "About Me", I'm a full time youth minister. One of the things I LOVE about my job, other than the fact I get to hang out with awesome youth all the time, is having the opportunity to get involved in missions- local, national and abroad. I have made amazing contacts over the years and still keep in touch with many people I met while serving others. I've traveled all over the eastern half of the US and into the Caribbean and Central America on mission trips. This summer our Junior High group will be working in the Appalachian Mountains while our Senior High and College groups will work in Costa Rica

Youth, missions and Walt Disney World are three things I love- (along with God, Family, Friends and Auburn University!) I would LOVE to be able to take my youth to WDW, but it's so far and expensive. But... what if I were able to combine it with a mission trip? Impact Florida was started by Sanlando United Methodist and offers week long and half week mission opportunities in the Orlando area.

How cool would it be to work with Impact Florida for a week or half a week and then spend time at Walt Disney World? Of course we wouldn't just "play" while at WDW, we could continue to do missions there and learn about missionaries around the world... Epcot! At each country we could have a mini lesson on how United Methodist missionaries are used in that country, where they serve, what they do and what their needs are. It could teach the youth about missionaries in our world and let them see how wonderfully connected the United Methodist Church is- especially through missions. For the youth who are interested in doing more missions, rather than just a week a year, they could learn who contacts are in different countries, how to start the process of becoming a missionary and what needs are in various countries around the world where missionaries may not be present.

If I had the right contacts, it would be great to talk with someone about the ways Walt Disney World and the Disney Company are involved in outreach and missions. It's obvious they are- they dedicated a whole year to "voluntears" through Give a Day, Get a Day in 2010!

We could hand out free water to park guests with a tag or sticker that reads:
13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life." John 4:13-14
It would be extra cool if the Night of Joy was in the summer so we could add that to our agenda!

So, that's my brainstorm at 11:45pm on Thursday night, when I should have been in bed hours ago! Thoughts?!?!

  1. I'm on board with you. I've heard of other groups going to Orlando for missions and then visiting WDW. I especially like the mission connection in Epcot. I think you're onto something. It's worth investigating.
