Recently on Facebook, someone mentioned "things to do in FL besides theme parks."  Obviously, my first love in Florida is Walt Disney World, but that does fall in the "theme park" category.  So, I'll share a few other things to do in Florida that don't have anything to do with Disney theme parks.  *note- this is hard for me, but I'll try! :)

Obviously, there are beaches on 3 sides of the state- East, South and West.  Every age in life can find a beach in Florida where they will feel comfortable and one that will provide what they need in a vacation.  Being from Alabama, we go to the panhandle area of Florida.  Growing up, we had family that owned cabins in Panama City, so that's my beach of choice!  But, if I could choose any beach to visit, I would choose Vero Beach!!  There isn't a theme park there! ;)

Just a short drive from Orlando (if you are visiting theme parks) is the Kennedy Space Center.  Once upon a time, you could view space shuttles taking off here.  Being only 20 minutes from Huntsville, AL where the Marshall Space Flight Center is located, I think a visit to the Kennedy Space Center would be fabulous!  I would love to compare the two.

Daytona International Speedway is another option if you are into NASCAR.  While I'm not a NASCAR fan, I am familiar with Talladega!  My parent's lake house is very close to 'Dega and we avoid the lake on race weekends.

The Florida Everglades National Park is another unique attraction in Florida.  While I have never been there, I have bitter feelings about it.  My senior year in college, final quarter, one of my professors was killed in the ValuJet airplane crash in the Everglades.  He was coming back to Auburn after visiting his daughter for the weekend in Miami.  While I think the Everglades would be a great place to visit, I'm not sure I want to due to the history.

One place I do want to visit in my lifetime is the Florida Keys.  My parents went there recently for a day trip and had a blast.  While I was on my way to Costa Rica, we flew over the Keys and I took a picture from the plane window!

St Augustine is another great city to visit!  I've been twice and had a great time.  There is a great blend of history, fun, beauty and beaches.  The restaurants and shopping were so much fun.  I think it's a great destination for all ages.

Finally, there are PLENTY of sports teams for you to visit and cheer for- especially if they are playing the Red Sox, Celtics or Steelers! :)
Jacksonville Jaguars
Miami Dolphins
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Miami Heat
Orlando Magic
Florida Miami Marlins
Tampa Bay Rays

So, there ya have it!  A post about a few things to do in Florida that don't involve theme parks!

  1. We did a Florida vacation once, no Disney. (Sad and depressing, I know. We did manage the Pirate and Princess Party at MK though!) We did some mini golf...can't really even remember what else in Orlando. We did a few nights in Daytona and had a great ocean front hotel. Beach, a lighthouse, a chocolate was a fun trip. It's rare that we go to Florida and not do Disney! :)
