Tiggerific Tuesday Trivia: The Black Pearl

Last week, I spent my time in Bayou La Batre, Alabama on our junior high mission trip. While we were there, we took a tour of the shipyards and shrimping industry. I learned a bit of Disney trivia while I was there and have been looking forward to sharing it with you today!

Disney Studios secretly built the Black Pearl from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest & At World's End in Bayou La Batre which was launched in April 2005.

For the first movie, the Black Pearl was a barge with wooden structures built on it to look like a real pirate ship. For the second and third movies, they built a real ship which was docked in Bayou La Batre, Alabama that would be sea worthy. They used the hull of the ship "HMS Sunset" as the set, though it wasn't an actual tall ship. The finished Black Pearl product had the "Sunset" hidden somewhere in there with engines, fuel and water tanks, a galley and bunks.

  1. Wow! I had not idea, but I'm not surprised to see Disney go to such lengths for movie details!

  2. Interesting - I remember on our honeymoon, they claimed in St. Lucia to have the Black Pearl from the movies... I'm guessing your sources are a bit better!

  4. interesting! I did a google search and St Lucia does have a ship that was used in PotC, but not the Black Pearl. Apparently, they now have the "Henrietta" whichever that one was! :)

  7. Amazing what they can do in the movies! Great trivia, but now I can't watch the movie without thinking that it's just a barge :)
